Fair Haven Rabies Alert – October 27, 2017

FAIR HAVEN - Please be advised that the Borough’s Regional Health Department has received confirmation of two raccoons testing positive for Rabies.  Fair Haven’s Animal Control Officer had responded to two separate calls of a raccoon that appeared sick and acting abnormally, between October 5 and October 21, 2017, both animals were located in the area of Third Street. The animals were captured and sent to the State Laboratory for testing. On Thursday, October 26, 2017, we were informed that both these raccoons did test positive for the rabies virus.

This alert is a strong reminder to our community that residents should not be interacting with wildlife or stray animals. If you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and please contact the Fair Haven Police Department at 732-747-0991.   Please make sure all domestic animals (dogs, cats, and livestock) are currently vaccinated with a Rabies shot. Do not let your pets run free off leash, even in the woods, to ensure they do not come in contact with wildlife that may be rabid.   Remember, Rabies is a fatal disease. The best course of defense is the vaccination of your pets and not handling or interacting with wildlife and strays.
